Auditions for "The Doll Shop"
a Summer 2020 Virtual Reading
Do you like to sing and act? Are you entering grades 2 - 7? Fantastic! We'd love for you to audition for the summer 2020 virtual reading of
The Doll Shop (a play with music) by EW Arnold!
What is The Doll Shop about?
The Doll Shop tells a wonderful story about a doll shop owner, her grumpy landlord, and the dolls who teach the landlord to be happy.
What are the roles in The Doll Shop?
There are 12 roles in the play. All roles are open to students of male or female gender and to those who identify in any non-traditional way.
Old Mrs. Bimilie - The Doll Shop owner
Mr. Solomon Crossby - her landlord
The Sailor Doll
The Soldier Doll
The Dutch Doll
The Flower Doll
Jumping Jack
The Witch Doll
The Rooster Doll
The Ballerina Doll
The School Girl Doll
The Sweetie Doll
What do I have to do to audition?
All you need to do is create a short video which includes the following:
There are 2 parts to the audition ... 1) Acting and 2) Singing (there are two roles that do not require singing so if singing isn't your "thing" you can still audition). The songs are all quite easy.
1) For the acting portion of the audition please prepare a paragraph from any storybook to read aloud on camera. Your reading should be rehearsed and polished but does not need to be memorized. Cara will be looking for vocal projection, a good tempo (not too fast and not too slow!), good diction (the pronunciation of the words), and great facial energy and expressions.
2) For the singing portion of the audition please prepare either Twinkle, Twinkle Little Star or Happy Birthday to be sung a cappella (without accompaniment - just the voice alone). The songs should be rehearsed and polished but do not need to be memorized (although that's a good idea if you can). The dolls will have all different types of voices so don't worry about singing too high or too low or too soft or too loud. Cara just wants to hear your best voice and to see you smile!
When is my audition video due and where do I send it?
Create your video as a YouTube link and email it to carademanuele@gmail.com no later than Saturday June 6, 2020.
When will I find out about casting and get my script?
Casting will be announced by 12 noon on Tuesday June 9, 2020. Your rehearsal materials will be sent soon thereafter. You will be provided with a script and if you are cast as a doll, a rehearsal recording for your song.
How will virtual rehearsals work?
3 company rehearsals (that means everyone in the cast) and 2 individual rehearsals will be held and scheduled based on the company's availability. Performers will work on their diction, breathing techniques, healthy vocal projection, vocal and facial energy, facial expressions and body language. The dates and times for the 3 company rehearsals will obviously need to be agreed upon between families. The individual rehearsals will be scheduled based on your family's availability. Dialogue and song lyrics do not need to be memorized for the reading. However, students are highly encouraged to do so if possible.
What will we wear?
To keep things stress-free and simple, yet professional, all actors will be asked to wear a solid color short or long-sleeved t-shirt with no writing (small logos are fine). You likely have something already in your wardrobe that will work.
When is the live virtual reading?
At some point in July 2020. The reading will be scheduled based on the company's (everyone in the cast) availability. The reading will also be recorded to share with family and friends.
Is there a fee for participation if cast?
Yes, there is a fee of $65 for participation. This includes 3 company rehearsals, 2 individual rehearsals, rehearsal recordings for songs, and script (pdf file). Once cast, families will be provided with the Venmo and PayPal accounts to use or the mailing address to forward a check.
