2-Day Intensive for Stage and Screen Actors (Syracuse, NY)
Friday March 20, 2020 6 - 9 pm
Saturday March 21, 2020 9 am - 4 pm
Syracuse, NY (specific location tba)
I am thrilled to be returning to Syracuse for 3 days in March 2020! What I like most about the majority of Syracuse-area actors is that they are humble and sincerely desire opportunities to work on the development of their craft. I work with too many actors who are looking for “fame and fortune” and want immediate success. Actors who understand that as much time as is spent in rehearsal, on set, in auditions or submitting on-line, that same amount of time needs to be dedicated to study. Developing talent is about longevity in this business, not about taking shortcuts. There are none. Invest the time in yourself.
If you haven’t worked with me before …
I’m a passionate, no-nonsense voice, acting and audition coach with over 30 years of experience training adults, children and teens. Through my high energy, humorous teaching style, I provide respectful, candid feedback and take a genuine interest in you and your personal goals as you develop your craft, build your resume, and hone your audition skills.
Are you a semi-professional or professional actor or singing actor seeking a new perspective and/or need new material? Are you interested in acting but have no idea where to start? Perhaps you’ve been in a few films or stage plays and taken a class or two but can’t seem to truly build any momentum? Are you the parent of a child or teen who needs guidance in finding high quality training and performance opportunities, in preparing for college auditions or in taking your child’s career to the next level?
There are two ways we can work together in March 2020 …
Private Coachings (for students ages 8 through adult) are available in acting, musical theatre voice and audition preparation on Thursday March 19 from 12 noon to 9 pm at a convenient Syracuse location tba.
Private coachings are $65/hour or $95/90-minutes. Pre-payment via PayPal or Venmo is required. To schedule a private coaching please email me at carademanuele@gmail.com. Please indicate what time you are available to meet and what your goals are for the coaching.
In addition to private coachings, I am offering a 2-day Acting Intensive for Stage and Screen Actors (ages 18+). The intensive will meet Friday March 20 from 6 – 9 pm and Saturday March 21 from 9 am – 3 pm at a convenient Syracuse location tba. There are only 12 spaces available for this intensive which allows ample time for each actor to work.
Monologues and scenes from stage and screen are used as the foundation for this 2-day Acting Intensive as actors explore breath, movement, character development and text analysis. This intensive is suited to all stage and screen actors ages 18+ who have a desire to work in a dynamic, inspiring group setting. Actors will be expertly guided in an encouraging, non-competitive environment as they continue in the development of their acting skills. One goal is for each actor to achieve clarity and confidence regarding acting choices to authentically portray characters for film and television projects as well as plays and musicals. This intensive is limited to 12 actors.
Tuition for this 2-day Acting Intensive is $150. To register please use the following link:

This workshop will provide young acting and musical theatre students with a session focusing specifically on "the business of the business". Attending "There's No Business Like Show Business" is a perfect way to start the school year off right! We'll talk auditions, resumes, head shots, networking with adults and peers, professional correspondence via email, thank you cards, and hand-written notes, and your social media presence (believe me - you ALL need help with that!). Training as a triple threat (singer/dancer/actor) is extremely important through work in the studio and in plays and musicals but if you fail to also "train" in this area you will most surely limit yourself. As a director, casting director, private coach and singer/actor, I'll share with you stories of success and failure, what directors, colleges, and theatre companies are looking for, and lots of hilarious anecdotes. Parents are welcome to join us for this session.

So, you've decided you want to pursue a career in the performing arts (musical theatre, acting, dance, music education, music performance, music therapy, arts administration) but have no idea what to do next. This workshop will provide students and parents with valuable information providing a roadmap for navigating through the sometimes overwhelming process of auditions. Although well-meaning, many high school guidance counselors do not have the expertise necessary for truly advising students in this specific area. Applying and auditioning for collegiate programs in the performing arts differs greatly from the process for students planning to pursue other degrees. After 35 years of coaching and advising students and their families, I have gained invaluable knowledge regarding trends, audition requirements, faculties, degree programs, and alumni and I would like to pass this knowledge on to you. My students have been accepted to some of the country's most competitive programs at colleges and universities including NYU, Point Park, Wagner College, Syracuse University, Ithaca College, The Cincinnati Conservatory, The University of Michigan, Emerson, Elon, and Boston Conservatory. At least one parent should plan to attend this workshop with their student.

Learn how to truly prepare for auditions by correctly interpreting audition notices and selecting and preparing monologues and songs (with strong 32 and 16 bar cuts) appropriate for the show you're auditioning for. Learn the importance of choosing the right attire, conducting thorough research prior to auditioning (know the show, characters, plot, time period), how to prepare for a callback, cold reading techniques, how to react and respond to the posting of the cast list, and more. A portion of this session will be dedicated to a mock audition.

Kick off the holiday season with this workshop focused on the art of the audition callback featuring scenes, songs and monologues from musicals which may include Scrooge, The Musical, Elf, The Musical, A Christmas Carol, A Christmas Story, Striking 12, and How The Grinch Stole Christmas. Callbacks often require cold readings and sight reading music. What do you do when your scene partner is basically sleeping on stage? How do you handle a dialect you're not proficient in when they ask you to "do your best"? What if you've been called in to read for the leading lady/man and they decide they want to read you for the character role? You can't let these things throw you. All you can do is be as prepared as possible and know that most of the casting process is out of your control. Learn how to showcase your talents and then let it go!

Frustrated with always scrambling at the last minute to find songs and monologues for auditions, competitions, talent shows, coffee houses, and cabarets? This workshop will teach you how to find the best songs and monologues for your voice, type, age and level of skill. Defying Gravity is a fabulous song but just not right for anyone who doesn't have an amazing high belt. If that's not you, don't sing it! Learn to put the spotlight on yourself with what you excel at and not by putting a magnifying glass on what you can't do well (although you might later on when you're a bit older or after you've had more training). Using better material will help you land more roles and gain loads of confidence. Every student will leave the workshop with 2 new songs and 2 new monologues to add to their repertoire.

Enjoy a roundtable discussion and performance exercises with like-minded students exploring themes found in classic and contemporary musicals. Young musical theatre performers may not have been guided towards an understanding of the ways in which politics, history, tragedy, struggle and the human existence appear within Broadway musicals. The title of this class, which is the opening line of Kander and Ebb's Cabaret is a perfect example. Other musicals full of non "boy meets girl" storylines include Into The Woods, Ragtime, Billy Elliot, Caroline or Change, and Chicago.

Explore these musicals and the history of the women's movement as told on the Broadway stage.

"Dancing Through Life"
To register for this individual workshop please use the link below.
https://www.eventbrite.com/e/monday-june-3-workshop-dancing-through-life-tickets-49212669419
The aim of this movement class is not to be confused with that of a dance class so if you're not a "dancer" - fear not. All movement used on stage as part of the storytelling is not set by the choreographer. Many times the movement is developed by you, the actor. Musical theatre performers need to move with ease in period costume from go-go dresses in productions of Sweet Charity, to multiple layers of heavy cotton undergarments in the dresses designed for Seven Brides for Seven Brothers, to men's breeches in The Scarlet Pimpernel. Directors rely on actors to use their bodies in stylized movement for shows like Pippin; actors playing supporting roles in Once on This Island need to be uninhibited when creating the movement for Papa Ge, Mother Earth and the God of Water; the ensemble of Brigadoon needs to create believable and authentic characters when selling their wares in MacConnachy Square; and company members playing bystanders in scenes like the picnic in Carousel and the auction in Oklahoma need to not only look comfortable but to make choices indicative of the show's setting and time period. This class will help young musical theatre performers to build confidence in their movement choices.
Workshops for Adults
All workshops are open to adult actors age 18+ as well as experienced high school seniors.
All Rochester classes in this series meet on Mondays from 7 - 9:30 pm at The Plex Theatre at 390 South Avenue, Rochester 14620.
The 10 class series ...
This series of acting classes has been created to be successful independently of one another. Actors are encouraged to take those classes which match their individual schedule and goals as they either begin or continue their journey in the development of the craft of acting. Actors with all levels of experience are welcome - from beginners to veterans who may be looking to brush up techniques. The focus of the series is the understanding and improvement of fundamental skills, the development of confidence and self-awareness, and the creation of a professional work ethic. Each class is limited to 8 actors, affording each actor the opportunity to work.
The instructor ...
Although most known as a renowned coach for children and teens in musical theatre, voice and acting, Cara D'Emanuele is also a passionate class instructor and private coach for adult actors and singer/actors. Her no-nonsense, candid feedback coupled with a dynamic teaching style and terrific sense of humor make her a popular, trusted and well-respected mentor by stage and screen actors throughout the central and western New York region. She provides a supportive, non-competitive environment, a myriad of opportunities for discovery, and material that resonates with and showcases every actor. She inhabits the motivation actors need to not only dedicate themselves to the development of the craft but to follow through with assignments, attend auditions, and become organized as the manager of their own career.
Student Testimonial ...
Cara allows you to be yourself; in fact, she helps you celebrate what makes you unique. Her classes and private coachings have helped me to develop the confidence I need to be successful, especially in auditions. I have not only booked more paying projects including speaking roles in feature films but have learned to incorporate relaxation and concentration skills on set.

"I have no idea what to do with my hands!" is a phrase I hear all the time! I consistently coach actors in the awareness of their weight (i.e. is it centered or more prominent on one side and should it be for the character?), in the use of their arms and hands (i.e. is the movement believable and is it necessary?), and in their use of the space (i.e. the rhythm and tempo of their walk). Become confident in making choices, finding organic, visceral and truthful movement.

Learn how to choose age-appropriate monologues for your type which are presented in the "active voice", to break the text into beats, to identify transitions, and the importance of research and an understanding or creation of a backstory.

Character Development
To register for this individual workshop please use link below.
https://www.eventbrite.com/e/character-development-acting-for-adults-series-tickets-49508959631
How do actors develop consistent, authentic, believable characters? My answer - through a myriad of methodologies. Restricting yourself to one method seems anxiety-provoking to me. (If this works for you - fabulous!) Learn to develop characters by drawing from one or more of the current and historical methods to create a process that works for you. This class encourages actors to give themselves permission to use imagination in the discovery of a successful approach to playing characters.
Monday January 14, 2019 7:00 - 9:30 pm
The Development of Body and Voice
To register for this individual workshop please use the link below.
https://www.eventbrite.com/e/the-development-of-body-and-voice-tickets-49508989721
Our body and voice are the instruments which we use to tell stories on stage and screen. This class affords actors an opportunity to explore physical and vocal choices that are consistent with the character and respectful of the playwright's text. Examine posture and gesture and unleash your freedom of expression. Learn to access your inner strength and empower your performances by meeting your true physical potential.
Monday February 11, 2019 7:00 - 9:30 pm
Scenes and Scene Partners
To register for this individual workshop please use the link below.
https://www.eventbrite.com/e/scenes-and-scene-partners-acting-for-adults-series-tickets-49510284594
*Participation in this class requires preparation of one scene from a contemporary play or film assigned prior to class (memorization will be encouraged).
Scene study provides actors the opportunity to combine the use of the foundational techniques they have acquired in other classes and to experience the collaborative process between actors and directors. Actors will learn to stay engaged with a scene partner, to discover playable actions, and to be truthful in the world of the scene.

Access Your "Tool Box" through "Improv"
To register for this individual workshop please use the link below.
https://www.eventbrite.com/e/access-your-toolbox-through-improv-acting-for-adults-series-tickets-49525603413
This class is not a traditional "improv" class (There are plenty of fantastic improv classes in Rochester, Syracuse and Buffalo!) but a unique gathering of actors working in a supportive, safe space as they discover emotional triggers and draw upon life experiences. When accessed, those life events fuel actors in the use of their full range of emotion. Although not dedicated to the methods of Uta Hagen or any individual master teacher, I do use the term "transference" often in my work with actors. Transference (substitution) will be explored during this class through improvisational acting and movement exercises.
Monday April 8, 2019 7:00 - 9:30 pm
How Do I Get Started?
To register for this individual workshop please use link below.
https://www.eventbrite.com/e/how-do-i-get-started-acting-for-adults-series-tickets-49524693692
This class is structured as a round-table discussion affording like-minded beginning actors the opportunity to define what type of acting career they are looking to experience (local community theatre, regional film projects, preparation to move to a bigger market) and to devise a plan for achieving that goal. All elements of the business will be introduced including resumes, acting reels, auditioning, background work, developing the singing voice for musical theatre, investing in a physical trainer or an audition wardrobe, and unions.
Monday May 13, 2019 7:00 - 9:30 pm
Script Analysis and Subtext
Subtext is a layer of storytelling that we as actors are responsible for conveying. As we work to strengthen our craft we need to develop an understanding of how to identify the unspoken thoughts and motives of characters. The subtext needs to be understood by the audience as the scene or play unfolds. During this class, actors will be guided in their exploration of script analysis as applied to scenes from plays and film.
Monday June 10, 2019 7:00 - 9:30 pm
Mock Audition
During this class actors will present monologues for critique and cold read in a mock audition format. I recently spent time with Tony Award nominee Adam Pascal who reminded my students that if you've given an audition that you're proud of, that's all you can do. The rest is out of your control - your height, your age, hair color, the height of the actor playing opposite the role you're auditioning for ... you can't change any of that. So, remembering Adam's advice, all you can do is prepare. Learning to dedicate the right techniques and required time and energy to audition preparation is an art form unto itself and individual to each actor.

This class affords actors an opportunity to explore physical and vocal choices that are consistent with the character and respectful of the playwright's text. Examine posture and gesture and unleash your freedom of expression. Learn to access your inner strength and empower your performances by meeting your true physical potential.

How Do I Get Started?

https://www.eventbrite.com/e/how-do-i-get-started-acting-for-adults-series-tickets-49524693692
